Awards

Awards are given each year for those that stand out in rangeland management across the state of Wyoming.  These are the folks that have gone above and beyond in the profession, whether running a livestock operation or improving rangeland management in federal, state or private sectors.  The WY Section Awards Handbook provides further information regarding each award.

Outstanding Man/Woman of the Range

A candidate for Outstanding Range Woman or Man must meet the following criteria:
1. The candidate must be actively engaged in ranching or range management; in the professional fields dealing with range management, which may be teaching, research, counseling and technical assistance; in range information such as magazines, newspapers, radio and TV; or in a business vitally interested in the betterment of the field of range management.
2. The candidate must be a recognized leader, one that is accepted over at least a large segment of the State, if not statewide, as being a progressive, enterprising person ever looking ahead to improvement of range management.

 

3. The candidate must be interested in the promotion and advancement of the art and science of range management, and preferably, though not required, a member of the Wyoming Section, Society for Range Management.

4. This final criterion must be given high priority in selection of a candidate and award winner. The candidate must have made a contribution to the advancement of the art and science of range management that is worthy of special recognition. It may have been made during the past year or previous years, but the contribution must still be recognized for its merit. Such contribution may consist of a new and inventive way of applying the science of range management; an outstanding research project that has been significant in its result, an outstanding article, publication or information activity that has widely acclaimed development. An application, outstanding treatment and management program on an operating unit. Leadership in the professional field of range conservation and management, these are examples of the outstanding contributions that may be considered for an award.

Excellence in Range Stewardship

This award is to recognize ranch

owners/operators who:

1. Has a good working knowledge of the important range plants.
2. Has a good understanding of range conditions and trend to the potential for different range sites.
3. Understands plant growth requirements and their significance to range management practices. 
4. Recognizes the importance of the land, vegetation, water resource, livestock, wildlife, watershed, recreation and aesthetic values.
5. Is a cooperator with a Soil and Water Conservation District?
6. Understands and follows proper use standards.
7. Adjusts livestock numbers as necessary to keep them in balance with range forage during low production years. 
8. Are range forage needs for wildlife considered in connection with the overall ranch operation?
9. Would you feel confident to have this individual manage your ranch operation?

 

Trail Boss Award

A candidate for Trail Boss has made:

* Noteworthy or outstanding contributions made in the past five years in the art and science of range management.
* Other awards or recognition received by nominee as a result of his/her contribution to range management or other related fields.
* Nominee has sound ecological principles in rangeland ecology as displayed by his/her work.
* Communicates effectively with associates in the field of range management.
* Nominee is able to effectively communicate ecological concepts of range management to public who has little or no understanding of the rangeland resource.
* Has been instrumental in directing others into range management.
* Keeps current with range research and other advancements in the art and science of range management.
* Actively promotes the art and science of range management.
* Is objective in all uses of rangeland.
